Volunteer!

So you want to be a Firefighter...

There is a great deal of excitement and a pride that comes with being a volunteer at South Pierce Fire & Rescue. The satisfaction, camaraderie, and experience received from the fire service is often beyond compare. However, this work is not for everyone. Firefighters need courage, dedication, assertiveness, and above all a desire to help others in need. Firefighters perform strenuous tasks that test their abilities in uncertain and often hazardous situations.

Men and women age 18 and older who are in good physical condition and have the desire to serve as firefighters are eligible to apply. SPFRE offers extensive training and advancement opportunities.

Our community and citizens rely heavily on the services provided by our committed volunteers. Whether it be extinguishing a structure fire, extricating a trapped motorist from their vehicle, saving a life, or simply taking a patient’s blood pressure, your experience at SPFR will be unique and filled with variety and challenge.

Volunteer Options:

1) Traditional In-District Volunteers live within the district’s boundaries. The minimum monthly requirement is 24 hours on shift, and in-district volunteers may also respond from home for calls where additional manpower is needed.

2) Out-of-District Volunteers live in other communities, but are welcome to serve our district by pulling shifts at one of our stations. The minimum monthly requirement is 48 hours per month.

Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 18 years of age
- No more than 3 moving violations in the past 3 years on your driving abstract
- No felony convictions, or crimes against a person
-Pass a firefighter physical

Training:
The first step in volunteering is successful completion of a 12-week fire training academy where basic firefighting skills are learned. After fire training is accomplished, you may start shift work with the department. Within one year of volunteering, you must be a certified Emergency Medical Technician Basic. We host this class in-house once annually.

We thank you for your interest in volunteer opportunities with PCFD 17. Download the application packet, email us or call (253) 843-2425 for more information.
